June 27th, 2022 marked the deadliest migrant smuggling tragedy in the U.S. To date, 53 are confirmed dead after being found in an 18-wheeler trailer in San Antonio, Texas. Among them are 22 from Guatemala. Many of these families are from Indigenous communities and face additional barriers such as language access and displacement from their ancestral homelands. After speaking with some of the families, their main concern is for their loved ones to be returned home as quickly as possible. Important cultural practices involve family staying with their loved ones during their transition and for the dead to be buried in their homeland.
